100th Post, Holiday Giveaway, A New Logo + Many Thanks!

Eight months, 100 posts, new connections, inspirations, and a whole slew of amazing discoveries.  I started this blog as a way to document my favourite recipes, and explore my interest in photography.  I didn’t really imagine anyone more than my close family and friends would read, but here we are, a lovely, supportive, interactive community!  Even more, I became a much better cook and more creative in the kitchen since starting Silk and Spice, and that is thanks to the many amazing bloggers I follow who inspire me every day.

Today, I am writing my 100th post, and to many that might not be much of a milestone, but I am quite proud of having written 100 posts since I started Silk and Spice back in March.  The best part is I get to have fun creating on this blog, and all of you are so supportive and interactive. I love hearing stories about recipes you made from Silk and Spice, and even more, when friends make my recipes for their omnivore loved ones and they are a hit.  We’re on a food revolution, I tell ya….

Over the last few weeks, many of you were so thoughtful in nominating me for great awards.   Bea from Body Energy Action and Johanna from Whole and Happy Food nominated me for the Sunshine Award. Thank you! Poppy from Poppy’s Patisserie nominated me for the Blog of The Year Award and The Dragon’s Loyalty Award. Thank you! Ajaytao nominated me for a collection of lovely awards.  Thank you!  Marianne from The Oven Diaries nominated me for the Versatile Bloggers Award.  Thank you!  I am extremely grateful, and in return I am hosting a Holiday Giveaway that is open to you all!

I thought about what to give away, and decided I wanted it to be something that would be a great resource for any one who is vegan, vegetarian, or dancing with the idea of going veg.  I am giving away a copy of VEGANOMICON!  This really is the ultimate vegan cookbook.  Everyday meals which are so simple and don’t use weird, unfamiliar ingredients.  I found that when I started cooking from this book, it made me very comfortable with plant-based cooking, and I didn’t really need to go back to it for exact recipes.  It gave me useful, everyday meal ideas which I could whip up quickly.  And, Isa Chandra is my plant-based heroine, so I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

My fondest holiday memory is always decorating the tree with my family. We go through our ornaments and each hang the ones we got when we were younger. It is the official start to the holiday season for me!

    • That is such a great tradition. I’ve started it with my son and although he’s only four, it’s already so nice to see him hang his own ornaments from years past. Thanks for sharing, Ani!

My favorite holiday memory is when my parents finally let me adopt a cat! I’ve never been happier then that! Ever!

I follow you on wordpress, Facebook, Twitter – I’m gonna tweet about your giveaway – is it enough? 😉 And I love the new logo! 🙂

BTW, today, I’m celebrating my third month of being vegan! 😀

AND happy veganversary!!! Keep it up. 🙂

  4. Last year, we spent Christmas night with my mother and her boyfriend. It was a quiet evening, just the four of us, with lots of food, plenty of laughter and it was the perfect preparation for the crazy days that were to follow.

I also have faint memories of a Christmas dinner when my dad was still alive. I remember sitting on the floor with all my presents (I think it was the year I got a Baby Born…) and being utterly content with life.

I already followed you on WordPress, and I just found you on Facebook. And yes, your new logo looks great 🙂

    • Thanks so much for sharing those sweet memories. I love the idea of a quieter, more intimate holiday. It sometimes seems so hectic!
You are entered in the contest, with extra entries! Good luck!
      Sophia 🙂

  5. Congratulations Sophia! I’m not active on Twitter but I just liked your page on FB. Here’s to lots more posts and food magic on Silk and Spice. Love the logo.. it’s delicate and neat.. perfect for you! 🙂 And favourite holiday memory is family sitting around the table, eating, and chatting late into the night!

  6. My favorite memory is the Christmas we spent in Disneyland – but not the Disney part, but the drive from Utah out there! It was so much fun as a family, and we did all the corny road trip things you do as a kid, except most of us were over the age if 15!

  7. Congrats on your 100th post Sophia!! That’s huge! I love your blog so, so much and I hope you don’t ever stop posting girlfriend. I’m so glad we’ve e-connected – it’s been great!! And thank you so much for hosting this lovely giveaway. I’ve heard a lot about Veganomicon and even sent it to my sister-in-law for Christmas, but I don’t have a copy. What a great gift!

As for my favorite holiday memory, mine is all the past nights I’ve gone with my husband and dog to look at fab Christmas lights. I love doing this! I’m also connected to you via facebook and Twitter. Celeste 🙂

  8. Congratulations on your 100th post!! What a great achievement!

My two favorite holiday memories that come to mind are when I was a little girl and I got a Cabbage Patch Kid for Christmas. I thought there was no way in the world that would happen, and they were highly sought after that year. I was thrilled. The second memory is of the Christmas evening when my husband asked me to marry him! So many reasons for me to love Christmas!

    • Wow! That’s so wonderful thay your husband proposed on Christmas! Very sweet.
I have very fond memories of getting a Cabbage Patch Kid for Christmas too. I just loved them so much. 🙂
Thanks for stopping by, and for your lovely comment.
Swing by soon to find out who won the contest!
      Sophia 🙂

  9. Heard about you on Celeste’s blog.
    My fave holiday memory:
My mom, sister, daughter, and I were attending a Christmas Eve candlelight service. Shortly after the candles were lit, was dripped around the circular cardboard protection disk and burned me. I jumped in agony. My daughter looked at me and laughed. I laughed. We tried to stay quiet. We looked around and every time someone else jumped, we got to laughing again. Those had to be the most worthless protection disks we ever encountered. Thank goodness – they made for a great memory!
    Thanks!
    Vanessa 🙂

    • That’s actually hilarious! Useless protection disks haha. 🙂
Thanks for sharing, I had a good chuckle. Celeste’s blog is fantastic, and I’m glad we connected through it.
      Good luck in the contest!
Swing by soon to find out who won.

I love looking forward to spending every Christmas morning making cinnamon rolls and opening stockings with my partner, Eric and my parents. We have done the same thing for 13 years, and it’s the best part of Christmas. Thanks for the giveaway! 🙂

    • Hi there! Thanks for sharing! Cinnamon rolls, yum. 🙂
Opening our stockings with my husband and my son is my favourite part of the holidays too. My son is always so surprised and ecstatic that Santa came and stuffed our stockings. 🙂
You are most definitely included in the contest with extra entries. Best of luck! Come back soon to find out who won!
      Sophia 🙂

  11. Debra says:

I just signed up to follow you. I am.so appreciative of my Mom for making Christmas special when we were young. When we were a in late elementary school she was in a serious car accident. She was badly hurt and was in the hospital for over 1 year plus many more times over the course of time. My Christmas every year after that was extra special just having her here with us. She was my best gift.

    • Wow, Debra thanks so much for sharing that. I can imagine how difficult that year must have been, especially at such a young age. Thanks for reminding me that although the holidays can be so hectic, having our family to spend it with is so important and special.
I’ve added you to the contest, best of luck!
      Sophia 🙂

  12. Christmas in the Philippines and attending both family reunions. I’d find myself in a room with a few hundred people I’d only see once a year and be in awe that I was related to every single one of them! And also-queso de bola as part of the midnight feasting on Dec 24.’s “Noche Buena”- my dad would slice the cheese a very specific way and made it feel like it was a big treat.

  13. I’m so glad Honk if Your Vegan shared this giveaway. I don’t think I would have found you otherwise. I love your blog!
My favorite holiday memory is yet to be made. This will be the first Christmas with our first baby. So much to look forward each year. I can’t wait to decorate cookies with her when she’s old enough.
If I had to pick a memory it would have to be the Christmas before my parents got divorced. My brother and I were still young and Christmas morning still had that magical feeling. I can’t wait to feel that again with my daughter.
P.S. I have done all of the other entries.

    • Thanks so much for sharing! I agree with you, the best memories I have of the holidays are the new ones I have made with my four year old son. It’s so special how magical it is for him. You have so much to look forward to with your little one.

Good luck in the contest as well! You are entered with extra entries!
      Sophia 🙂

  14. I was once my good friend’s “beard” aka he hadn’t come out to his family and used me as his girlfriend. He often helped me with my costumes when we did plays together.

That Christmas day, I was wearing thigh highs and a garter belt under my holiday outfit. Somehow one of the garter belts snapped and he was under my skirt helping me fix my garter belt. His little cousin walked in and screamed downstairs, “HE’S HAVING SEX WITH HIS GIRLFRIEND!!!”

Then we hear from downstairs, “OMG HE ISN’T GAY!!!”

We couldn’t stop laughing … he’s since come out and his family accepts him for it. But we all still laugh together during the holidays about that tale.

    • If I was picking a winner based on best story, it would be yours, Janice! So hilarious!
I’m glad your friend has come out since then, and that his family accepts him for who he is.
Great tale. Thanks for sharing and good luck in the contest!
      Sophia 🙂

      • Thanks for holding the contest! Been having my eye on this book for a while. Will most likely get it if I don’t win still! hehe I had just borrowed it from the library and I was copying so many of the recipes that I was like, “OK time to just pay up and buy it!”

Yeah, I love that story. It puts a smile on my face every year it gets brought up again, “HEY! Remember the one time we thought you two were doing it upstairs?!” lol

My favorite holiday memory is decorating the tree with my brother. Now that we are adults, it’s become a tradition that I cherish! Thanks for the giveaway 🙂

  16. John says:

My favorite holiday memory is going out to my Uncles farm to hunt for our Christmas tree. I’ll never for get the 10 footer we brought home one year! The whole extended family would enjoy the day outside tobogganing, riding around on the horse sleigh and drinking hot chocolate. Once we were all played out we would we would finish the day off with a gigantic bonfire and dip in to some of the Christmas baking. Good times!

Merry Christmas Silk and Spice! Looking forward to what 2014 has to bring. Cheers!

    • Love the sound of that! Thanks for your lovely comment, and joining the conversation. You are entere in the contest with extra entries. Swing back this weekend to find out who won!
